Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
I think it's been a week or so since I finished this book and I still don't know what to think.
Jules is down on her luck, to say the least. She's laid off from her job, catches her boyfriend cheating, and down to her last couple hundred dollars. When she sees an ad in the paper for an apartment sitter, she feels maybe her luck is turning around. The rules are simple: no visitors, no nights spent away from the apartment, and no speaking to other residents. It all seems easy enough until Jules starts learning about the past that haunts her new home.
Let's first start with some of the things I really liked:
The setting! This takes place in the Bartholomew--a 1929 apartment building with gargoyles and dumbwaiters and creepy wallpaper. I thought Riley Sager did a really good job setting up the atmosphere.
The structure. The story begins with Jules being whisked into a hospital after what appears to be a car accident. She then flashes back to when she first got to the Bartholomew and the events leading up to her stay at the hospital. I really enjoy back-and-forth, flashback style stories. This one allowed for some clues to get dropped, but also served as an interruption in the action, adding some suspense.
As for thinks I wasn't a huge fan of...
The twist(s). There were just a) too many and b) the final one felt a little lackluster? I'm fairly picky about plot twists in thrillers, and there aren't many that really wow me.
The ending itself. It felt a little neat, and I want a messy ending in my thrillers lol.
Overall, it was just a little "eh" for me. It's been a while since I finished and I really can't think of much more to say on the subject. It was a forgettable thriller for me, but I'll definitely read more Riley Sager in the future.
